Green Vision Statement
for Red Cedar Friends Meetinghouse

  • We seek a world free of war and the threat of war.
  • We seek a society with equity and justice for all.
  • We seek a community where every person's potential may be fulfilled.
  • We seek an earth restored.

  • - Friends Committee on National Legislation

In accord with our values, here are some things we should consider when designing our meetinghouse:

  • The building should require few or no fossil fuels to maintain.
  • We should try to build using as few imported or non-sustainably harvested materials as possible.
  • We should try to use as many reused or salvaged materials as possible.
  • We should try not to pave over any more land than is absolutely necessary.
  • We should try to use few or no toxins that cause allergic reactions in sensitive people or contaminate the air and water.
  • The maintenance of the building should use as little water as possible.

Careful design of the building may help us be able to use it as a teaching and outreach tool for the community. We could use it to demonstrate ways to build that are inexpensive (so they are accessible to all) and the least damaging to the environment.

We should be mindful to make do with less, to be humble in our expectations and to keep the good of the community in mind.
